Devious Journal Entry

Tue Aug 11, 2009, 3:50 PM
- I really don't like visiting the doctor. This, mostly, is because of medical records. Medical records are these bald statements of fact without appropriate explanations; in courts, at least, motive matters. But in a medical history, nothing ever goes away, and nothing ever has a backstory. You don't get to say, "That was when I broke my wrist climbing a tree with Sarah, and that scar is from the dreadful chair with the metal in the back, and I caught pneumonia running outside in the rain in the middle of January with some people I love." It's a broken wrist, scar tissue, and pneumonia. Of course, sometimes I think I hate seeing the doctor because even if there were a space on the medical history page (as opposed to a square to check or not) I'd have no good explanation. <Also- a soul is intangible, and can be cleaned and saved. A body (and a medical history) is dead weight that doesn't do a very good job of showing the inside parts. You can be born again, but the physical facts are stubborn.>

- Home is a place, but it is also a time. But you already knew that. And as long as you are in it, it is merely background. When you're removed from it, it stands alone on the stage so that you can stare at it longingly.

- I love and hate to be around people who understand themselves and act accordingly. You know, the ones who suit themselves so perfectly, who utterly become themselves. You admire and enjoy them, but that envy creeps in, too.

- There are some people who you call 'friend' when in your heart you mean 'acquaintance.' There are some people with so much of God's love inside them, and you can be only an 'acquaintance,' but they still mean 'friend.'

- Sunscreen really is all that it is cracked up to be. Boz Ihurman was absolutely right.

- There are quotes in stories and books that you want to write down and commit to memory, because they are so alive and hold so much inside of them that you want to share it with everyone. The fact that you can only write them down, and that you can't go saying them to everyone you meet is a shame, because sometimes I want to just call people up and say, "Listen to this."

- When you most want God, you become too loud in your head, with a pounding heartbeat and chattering mind, to hear Him when He speaks. You sit there, thinking about all of the things that you aren't, and all of your problems, and your big miseries, and your small ones, and you flip through your Bible expecting some notable quote to leap from the dry pages at you and sooth your fretful, agitated spine. But God is a still, small voice in the quiet, after the earthquake and the flames have come and gone, and if you breathe slowly and look at the sunshine and the quiet around you, you can hear him so much better... I'm still working on that last part. Knowing what to do and doing it are different, and in most situations I know but fail to act.

-A sermuncle really is a short sermon.

It's falling from the clouds
A strange and lovely sound
I hear it in the thunder and rain
It's ringing in the skies
Like cannons in the night
The music of the universe plays
